Finding us on Oxford Road

Dough Club Oxford Road is number 403, in the run of units between 403 and 419, immediately next door to Manchester Royal Infirmary. Whitworth Park sits opposite the hospital and that is the landmark most people navigate by. Coming south from the university buildings you reach the hospitals first, and we are on that stretch. For a satnav or a courier, the postcode is M13 9WG.

This is the Oxford Road corridor, and the address does most of the explaining. The University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University and the Royal Northern College of Music all stand on this road. So does a run of connected hospitals, south of the university campus, with the Royal Infirmary the closest of them to our counter. The road is also the northern end of the Wilmslow Road bus corridor: five and a half miles from Parrs Wood into the city centre, often claimed to be the busiest in Europe. On a weekday in term time there is at least one bus a minute in each direction between Piccadilly Gardens and Withington.

On paper the postcode falls in the Ardwick ward, on the Chorlton-on-Medlock side of the line. Nobody standing outside calls it either of those things. They call it Oxford Road.

Six days a week, and the only late one

Oxford Road opens at midday, Monday to Saturday. It is the only Dough Club you can walk into for lunch on a weekday and the only one trading six days. Monday to Thursday the oven runs until 10pm. Friday and Saturday it runs until midnight.

The midnight close is the part worth committing to memory. A shift at the hospital that finished late, a library session that overran, a night that has gone past the point where anybody is going to cook: this is the shop still baking. No other Dough Club is open past ten at any point in the week.

It cuts the other way too. A midday order and an order at half past eleven at night both land inside the Friday window here, and neither of them lands anywhere else in the group.

Sunday we are shut. For halal Detroit-style pizza in Manchester on a Sunday, Withington opens at four in the afternoon and Cheadle Hulme opens at midday.

Collection and delivery

Dough Club is built for takeaway and Oxford Road runs both routes. Collection is the quicker of the two and it is there every day we are open. Order ahead in the app, pick Oxford Road, and take it off the counter. Delivery across this part of Manchester goes through the same app and is carried by our partner couriers.

What to take away

Every pizza sells two ways, here and at every shop: by the pan, which is the 8 by 10 tray cut into four so that every piece is a corner piece, or by the slice. On a road with a timetable running through it, the slice earns its keep. If you are feeding more than yourself, take the pan.

Sweet Peps is pepperoni under diagonal lines of hot honey. Classic Marg and Margarita Deluxe are both meat free, as are the garlic bread, focaccia bites and mozzarella sticks. Every meat ingredient is halal certified, we do not serve pork, and no alcohol goes into any dish or any dough. It is stated up front rather than buried in a footnote.

The other two shops

Three shops, three different weeks. Withington is at 1 Queen Street West, just off Wilmslow Road, open Wednesday to Sunday from four in the afternoon, with no phone line, so everything there goes through the app. Cheadle Hulme is in Metropolitan House on Station Road, open at five on Wednesday and Thursday and from midday on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The pattern is worth holding on to. On Monday and Tuesday, Oxford Road is the only Dough Club trading anywhere. On Sunday it is the only one shut.

Everything in this list is fixed across all three shops. The dough is proved and par-baked off site, so the Oxford Road counter starts from the same slab as the other two.
